We are very excited to announce that The Avett Brothers will be headlining Sunday at next year's Merlefest! A note from the Brothers: "We have attended MerleFest, as fans and as performers, since 1994. There is not a finer or more welcoming music festival in the country. Those who make their way to Wilkes Community College for the event this year will find, as they would any year, a sincere and friendly place where the music is as colorful and beautiful as the North Carolina countryside that leads them there. MerleFest offers four days of absolute quality for the music-loving family. For us, in terms of performance, it is very much like coming home."

Still Your Man - In Stores Today!!
Today we bring to you Still Your Man, the newest effort from Paul Burch! The album has been getting rave reviews, and we can't wait to share it with you all. Click here to order your copy now!
A little more about the album:
Still Your Man features Paul with his band the WPA Ballclub and guests Kelly Hogan (Neko Case's Boyfriends) and
Tim O'Brien. Produced with bassist Dennis Crouch (Robert Plant/Alison Krauss, Elvis Costello). Paul Burch has collaborated with Mark Knopfler, Ralph Stanley, the Mekons as well as a soundtrack to Tony Earley's children's novel "Jim the Boy".
In the early 90s, Burch's marathon performances in Nashville's honky tonk district on Lower Broadway brought a new buzz to live music in Music City. Billboard called PB's debut "extraordinary, establishing Burch as a leader in marrying country's roots tradition with a modern sensibility." While leading the WPA Ballclub, PB also
participated in Lambchop's key breakthrough albums (Nixon, Is A Woman) while also
contributing to albums by Beverly Knight, Vic Chesnutt, Ryan Adams, and Candi Staton and performing with Laura Cantrell. PB's music has appeared in films by Walt Disney, BBC, HBO, and Public Television.
“Backed by one of the best bands on country music’s cutting edge, there is joyous timelessness here that should put the big-hat Nashville crowd to shame.” -Chicago Sun Times
“Remarkable” -New York Times
“Elegant” -Entertainment Weekly

The Avett Brothers hit the legendary Newport Folk Festival and garnered some attention from The Boston Globe and Rolling Stone, while the others spent the weekend baking in the unusually hot Portland sun out at Pickathon.
Thanks to everyone who came out to see all of these bands and made them feel welcome. It means a lot!!

In other news, Frontier Ruckus just got back from a very successful trip to Europe and will be hitting the great American open road hard soon, thanks to the folks at New Frontier Touring, who recently signed the band! New Frontier is home to The Avett Brothers and Bombadil and we are very excited to have them on the team!
AND - Jim Avett recently stopped by Harvey's Kitchen in Greensboro to sing a new song for the cameras. It's a beautiful video and song, so make sure to check it out here. Jim has been hard at work in the studio, so be on the lookout for something new soon!

Bombadil CD Listening Party July 11!
As you may or may not know, Bombadil has recently (much to all of our dismay) had to cancel all of their upcoming shows to take a break from playing, indefinitely. Daniel, who sings and plays guitar, piano, and a slew of other instruments, has been overtaken by a serious, serious case of severe tendonitis and the doctors have ordered him to do nothing but rest.
On a positive note, they do have a new record, Tarpits and Canyonlands, coming out on July 7th. AND they will be having a FREE listening / CD release party at the Golden Belt Gallery in their hometown of Durham on July 11th!
There will be live music, free food, prizes and more. Plus, you can buy the record!! And we aren't even exagerrating a little when we say this is one of our favorite records of the year. We're really proud of it and hope you will pick up a copy and give it a listen.
Here are some more bullet-pointed details, for a full schpeel, click here.
Saturday, July 11th @ Golden Belt, 7pm-Artwork on display from the special Bombadil / IdiotsBooks collaboration
-Live performances by Luego and The Tender Fruit
-Free food from local eateries
-James, defending his honor on the Ping Pong table
-Free raffles featuring unique band memorabilia as prizes
-A casual listening of the new record
-More to come soon!
Tours, Records and Horns!
It's been a couple of weeks since last we wrote, and things have certainly been happening.
First of all, The Avett Brothers and Samantha Crain & the Midnight Shivers head out together on tour this week! They will be playing 9 dates together in the Midwest. For more details, click here.
Samantha and the Shivers also have a couple of pretty cool extracurricular activities lined up over the next few weeks. On June 22nd, they will be on Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour in Lexington KY; on July 20th, they will be on the World Cafe with David Dye AND on July 26th, they will be on Mountain Stage! Oh, and her performance on KUT in Austin was recently selected as an NPR "Favorite Session" ... check it out here!
We are also gearing up for two new releases in August - The Duke and The King: Nothing Gold Can Stay on August 4th and Paul Burch: Still Your Man on August 18th. Both of these releases will be available in record stores nationwide and through online retailers.
AND - both of those albums would sound especially great coming through a pair of Specimen Horn Speakers (pictured above)! We recently picked up a pair of these beauts and want to tell the world about them. They are hand built by Ian Schneller and his staff at Specimen Products and are driven by a tube amplifier. There's something about hand-built speakers that just makes hand-built music sound better. Check them out if you get a chance.
Until next time...
Thanks to Charlotte!!
Thank you SOOO much to everyone who came out to Ramseur Records night this past Friday. Help save Paste Magazine!!
Over the years, Paste Magazine has been incredibly supportive of all of our artists. And now they are in trouble - so, help us support them for a change! If you make a donation of any size, you can download 70+ rare & exclusive tracks, including two from our artists - The Avett Brothers and Samantha Crain! For details please see below or click here.
From Paste:
“Today, Paste Media Group, publisher of the two-time National Magazine Award nominee Paste Magazine & PasteMagazine.com, will launch an online fundraiser to keep the magazine functioning in the midst of the global financial recession.
As a completely independent magazine, Paste has struggled for the past nine months as advertisers have decided to wait on buying ads in response to the recession. Last month, cash received unexpectedly reached an all-time low, and turned a tough situation into a short-term crisis.
Rather than shut its doors, Paste is launching a reader appeal today to help save the magazine. Many of the artists who’ve been covered by Paste over the years—folks like us, William Fitzsimmons, Ari Hest, Neko Case, The Decemberists, Of Montreal, She & Him, Josh Ritter, The Avett Brothers, Brandi Carlile and the Indigo Girls—have donated rare and exclusive tracks to give to anyone who donates to the cause. Two of the tracks were recorded specifically for the campaign. Plus Sixthman has donated an ocean-view cabin on next year's Cayamo Cruise, and bands like R.E.M. and Band of Horses have donated signed posters to be given away to random supporters.
While the current situation is dire, long-term, Paste expects to emerge from the recession in good shape. 2008 was the magazine’s best year across the board—print subscribers, print ads, online readers and online advertising were all at record levels. PasteMagazine.com consistently draws more than 900,000 visitors each month, and the magazine has grown into the third largest rock magazine in the world. Meanwhile new advertisers have come on board and more are ready to begin doing business when their advertising budgets return.
Artists include William Fitzsimmons, Ari Hest, The Decemberists, Neko Case, She & Him, Cowboy Junkies, Of Montreal, Indigo Girls, Jayhawks, String Cheese Incident, G. Love, Josh Rouse, The Hives, Matthew Sweet, The Avett Brothers, Joe Henry, John Roderick of The Long Winters, Over the Rhine, Bob Mould, Arrested Development, Brandi Carlile, John Doe, Josh Ritter, Marc Broussard and more. We also have a number of goodies (such as signed R.E.M. and Band of Horses posters, an ocean-view cabin on next year's Cayamo cruise, and more) to give to donors in random drawings.”

CCDs Sign to Nonesuch + more!
A few things worth noting happened in the Ramseur stable last week....
First of all, the Carolina Chocolate Drops announced last week that they have signed with Nonesuch Records, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers. Nonesuch will release their next album in early 2010. To watch a video update from them, click here. We are very proud of their success and are excited to represent an artist under the Nonesuch umbrella!
Second, The Avett Brothers had an amazing turnout at their Record Store Day performance at Grimey's in Nashville. Over 1,000 folks showed up to see them, climbing trees and fences just to catch a few songs. To watch a video of "Paranoia in Bb Major" from that day, click here. Make sure you get to 2:22! The Brothers will start their tour with the Dave Matthews Band this week, with a show in Raleigh on Wednesday, Charlotte on Friday, Birmingham on Saturday and New Orleans on Sunday.
Also, for those of you who were there at Grimey's on Saturday, you may have noticed that Scott Avett was wearing a "Tara Engstrom Has A Posse And I’m In It" t-shirt during the show. Tara is a dear friend of Scott, Seth and Bob and is putting up a great fight against breast cancer. She is a huge inspiration to many. The Brothers were very honored to play a private party in February for Tara, her friends and family. It was a very special night and something that will never be forgotten. For more information on Tara and her battle against the big C please visit her blog at: http://illkickcancersass.blogspot.com/ And to support Tara's fight by ordering a t-shirt, please contact her brother - Gus Engstrom at: eengstrom@carolina.rr.com
Bombadil will be heading to Pennsylvania and Ohio this week, and Samantha Crain & the Midnight Shivers will be in Georgia, Florida and Texas this week. New Videos Up, RR Night Soon!
We hope this late March day finds you all well. We are gathering our senses after a very busy trip to SxSW last week, and are happy to be back home in the Old North State.
First of all, if you haven't checked it out already, we'd like to point you in the direction of our new Vimeo channel. Right now, you can check out some exclusive "Ramseur Records HQ Sessions" with Sam Quinn + Japan Ten and Samantha Crain & the Midnight Shivers. Oh - and The Avett Brothers are in Rolling Stone magazine!! Click here to read that article.
That's all for now!
Ramseur Records Night, The Boss & Sam Quinn!
Well, it's been a while since we last updated. We've been keeping busy and gearing up for a very busy 2009. Here's just some of the things that are happening in the Ramseur world.
First of all, we have solidified the line-up, date and location for the second ever, semi-annual Ramseur Records night. On May 22nd, Samantha Crain & the Midnight Shivers, Frontier Ruckus, Paleface and Bombadil will all take the stage at the Visulite Theatre in Charlotte as part of a Ramseur Records extravaganza. We are going to try to make this an annual thing, but we need your help -- we need you to be there! So, please, tell friends family and foe: this is the place to be. We have a couple more things up our sleeve for this night that we will announce soon, so stay tuned.
Samantha Crain & the Midnight Shivers hit the road last week for the beginning of a pretty hefty Spring tour, which includes shows with William Elliott Whitmore, Josh Ritter, the Felice Brothers, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down and Langhorne Slim, as well as stops at Wakarusa, the Native American Film Fest (presented by Jim Jarmusch) and SxSW! Please, if you haven't already, check out all of this one's tour dates. She puts on a great show, so you won't want to miss it.
In other Sam news, Sam Quinn of the everybodyfields will be playing with his new band, the Japan Ten - THIS Thursday and Friday, in Charlotte and Hickory, respectively. We hope those of you in the Charlotte area will give Sam some Ramseur Records hometown support. The show is at the Visulite and it starts at 8. Sam will also be adding some new tour dates in NC and TN very soon. Keep your eyes glued to the everybodyfields site for these, and also be on the lookout for a site of Sam's very own, complete with tunes, sooner than later.
The Avett Brothers are also heading out on the road pretty soon. They will be making a stop at SxSW in a few weeks to play NPR's showcase with the Heartless Bastards, the Decemberists and more on 3/18 -- then, they will play the Paste / BrooklynVegan party the following day. They will also be hitting the road hard starting in April, so make sure to click here for all their dates. And while you're over there, you might want to check out a video that was posted by the one and only Bruce Springsteen last week. The Boss asked a few artists to film themselves playing their favorites and The Avetts chose "Glory Days." In just a week, this video has been viewed 45,065 times!! We hope you like it.
Bombadil is taking some time off from the road, but they will be kicking off their Spring tour with a show at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh on April 10th. They will be playing with Lost in the Trees and Charlotte's own Benji Hughes. Tickets are on sale now ... this will not be a show to miss. Their new album, Tarpits and Canyonlands, is due out in June.
Well, that's all from the Ramseur stable for now. Please keep coming back for more news and updates in the coming weeks!
New Bands, Tour Dates, Recording and more!
After a successful 2008 with bands new and old to the Ramseur fold, we have decided it's time to let our family grow a little. We are now proud to represent Frontier Ruckus as management. This young band from Lansing, MI has a unique roots-infused indie rock sound that has been dazzling the press and audiences alike. We are excited to join them as they continue their journey - now fresh out of college, free of obligation and ready to hit the road hard. We hope that you will take a second to listen / check them out here. OR even better - if they stop near you on tour, make sure to get out there and show your support. We will have lots of updates about this new endeavor in the coming weeks.
In other news, yesterday (Feb 3, 2008) was the 50th anniversary of "the day that music died." Fifty years ago, a plane carrying legendary musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper crashed, killing everyone on board. This was a profound loss, the impact of which can still be felt today. Dolphus Ramseur and Seth Avett are both huge Buddy Holly fans, and were honored to say a few words for a Paste magazine feature, commemorating this anniversary. Click here to check out the full story, here for Dolph's piece, and here for Seth's.
On a much lighter note, things are really picking up for Samantha Crain & the Midnight Shivers. They will be heading out at the end of February for a tour with William Elliott Whitmore, then heading down to SXSW for an ASCAP showcase and much more; then stopping in Alexandria, VA for a show with the Felice Brothers on April 15th! After that, they will hit Shakori Hills in NC before heading out on a month-long tour with Thao & the Get Down Stay Down. On top of all this, their new record, Songs in the Night hits stores on April 28th! Two songs from that album are posted now on their website. Click here to listen and check out all the tour details!
Paleface's first release on Ramseur Records, The Show is On the Road, is due out on April 28th, too. Don't forget!
The Avett Brothers are gearing up for a very big year, as well. They just announced some new tour dates - one with Widespread Panic, eight with Dave Matthews Band, and a few headlining shows of their own. They will head out in April, and their new album (produced by Rick Rubin) will hit stores this summer! Click here for more on The Avett Brothers.
the everybodyfields are taking some time off right now, but in the meantime, Jill Andrews and Sam Quinn are spending some time on solo projects. Jill will be playing a couple of shows in Knoxville, while Sam Quinn and his new band Japan Ten will be hitting Bristol, TN on 2/6, Charlotte, NC on 3/5 and Hickory, NC on 3/6. We hope you will come out and support Sam in his new outfit, as these will be their first shows ever.
Last, but not least, Bombadil and the Carolina Chocolate Drops are both currently squinting at the sun and crawling out of their respective studios. The CCDs finished up recording their second full-length album with producer Joe Henry just a few weeks ago, and Bombadil will be finishing up their second effort this week. They are working with Scott Solter (Spoon, John Vanderslice, Mountain Goats) at his studio in Monroe, NC called Baucom Road. To check out a video message from the boys in the studio, click here! And don't forget, if you're anywhere near the Lincoln Theatre on April 10th, make sure to stop in for Bombadil's first show in the triangle and, well, at all in 2009.
We have SO much more to say, but will leave that for another day. Stay tuned for the second annual (yes, we skipped last year) Ramseur Records night in May, more exclusive videos and some very big shows with all of our bands.

Samantha Crain @ SXSW, Big Tour Plans & more!
If you haven't visited www.samanthacrain.com recently, make sure to head on over when you get a chance. Samantha and the Shivers recently announced a month-long tour with ANTI recording artist William Elliott Whitmore that will take them from Oklahoma to Louisiana, Florida and even up to the Carolinas.
After that tour, they will be heading down to South by Southwest in Austin, where they've been invited to showcase!
Then, they'll be heading out on tour with Thao with the Get Down Stay Down, but not before stopping by the Old North State one more time to play at Spring Shakori Hills. They'll even add a stop in Alexandria, VA along the way to open up for the Felice Brothers!
AND, they recorded a session for Daytrotter.com a couple months ago, and it was posted last week. Click here to check it out!
Don't forget - their new album, Songs in the Night, hits stores April 28th. This is going to be a big year for Sam and the Shivers. We hope you'll be along for the ride.

Happy 2009!!
Thanks so much to everyone for such a wonderful year. Over the past 12 months, we have welcomed two new bands into the Ramseur family, released three albums to stellar reviews, and seen our acts grace stages from Bonnaroo to the Grand Ole Opry and back. We got to stand behind The Avett Brothers as they signed a major label deal with Columbia Records and went into the studio with the legendary Rick Rubin. And we met so many smiling faces along the way.
We can't thank you all enough for your support and hope that you will join us in 2009, which we hope will prove to be our biggest year yet. Just a small glimpse at the things that are coming up:
-New albums from: Samantha Crain & the Midnight Shivers (Songs in the Night: 4.28.09), Paleface (The Show is on The Road: 4.28.09), Bombadil (as of yet untitled, Summer 2009) and maybe even a few surprises...
-The Avett Brothers will open 8 dates for Dave Matthews Band in the Spring, and will continue on to hold their own headlining tour
-As always, all the Ramseur bands will be touring all over the country (*and maybe even the world*)
There's so much more in the works that we can't reveal just yet - so make sure to keep checking in. We will be posting news as often as we have it!
Happy New Year to all.

Ramseur Family & Friends Tops of 2008!!
With our biggest year ever coming to a close, the staff at Ramseur Records decided that we'd like to put together a list of our favorite records from this year (thanks to a suggestion from the pint-sized Samantha Crain).
As we started compiling our lists, we realized that there are probably a lot of people in the greater RR fold that would like to play music critic for a day, too. So, we opened the door of opportunity to all of our bands, friends and co-conspirators -- and welcomed anyone who wanted to participate to give us their top 5 or 10 records of 2008.

Envoy gallery presents: Scott Avett. Drawings.
For more info on Envoy or to purchase any of the drawings in the series, call 212.226.4555, visit www.envoygallery.com or stop by 131 Chrystie St, New York, NY.
“While traveling constantly and moving as often as I do, I have learned that to occupy my time with learning and or creating is crucial to my well-being as an artist. It is important, like all things, that a balance is enforced and that I don't shut myself off entirely from my surroundings for there is so much to see around us. Never-the-less there are times where there is no way to turn but inward as well as there are times that the only way to grow or complete a task is to disappear and work. The drawings available through envoy gallery are products of that time disappearing. Each come from one of three scenarios, which are all, linked to my time with The Avett Brothers and our creative journey. One is self-portrait, my most loyal and accessible subject matte r, second is the observational drawing which is a drawing of a person place or thing around me used as practice or just to kill time, and three are preliminary drawings that serve as research for the visual side of The Avett Brothers.”

Ramseur Records and Triad Stage Present: Control
Ramseur Records is honored to help bring the movie Control to Triad Stage at the Pyrle Theater in Greensboro, NC
Sunday, December 7th - 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
For more information on the screening, click here.
Control is a biopic of ill-fated Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis. Based on the memoir TOUCHING FROM A DISTANCE by Deborah Curtis, Anton Corbijn's CONTROL is as near perfect a filmic telling of the story of Joy Division and Ian Curtis as any fan could hope for. It's also a beautifully rendered piece of cinema about the crippling effects of love and regret, and the salvation we seek in art. Born out of England's post-Sex Pistols punk explosion, Joy Division played a dark, minimalist version of the nascent sound, and became cult heroes thanks in part to their brilliant yet disturbed frontman Ian Curtis (played by an eerily perfect Sam Riley). Corbijn does a wonderful job recreating the Manchester band's music and live show, cutting straight to the essence of Joy Division's unique appeal. Credit must also be given to the three actors who portray the rest of Joy Division. Playing all the instruments themselves, they perfectly capture the band's powerfully stoic presence, one that translates both live and on record into the sonic equivalent of an existential crisis.
CONTROL, however, is ultimately about Curtis' tumultuous marriage to his wife, Deborah (Samantha Morton), and the way that Joy Division became an aesthetic manifestation of his pain--one that was both physical (Curtis was an epileptic) and emotional. Corbijn evokes Curtis' hurt and isolation with both honesty and subtlety; a photographer originally, he frames each shot to look like a stark black-and-white photo from an album the audience was never meant to see, making Curtis' pain palpable and his eventual suicide that much more tragic. The overtones to the later suicide of Kurt Cobain are hard to avoid, but where Cobain's suicide has always been discussed in terms of the pressure he felt as a rock star, Curtis', as rendered by Corbijn, is a pain anyone could potentially be forced to suffer through.

A great weekend..
We had a great weekend in the Ramseur camp.

Second, Bombadil had their biggest hometown show yet at the Cat's Cradle with over 400 in attendance! We hope that next time they return to the Cradle, they will have a new CD in hand. To see some photos from the show courtesy of our good friend Adam Hajnos, click here.
The Carolina Chocolate Drops also had a groundbreaking weekend - they played the Grand Ole Opry for the SECOND time! We are very proud to be working with this group and only see the best of things in their future.
the everybodyfields and Samantha Crain & the Midnight Shivers were also plugging away this weekend with shows in the Carolinas and midwest. To see a video of the everybodyfields singing "All I Have To Do Is Dream" by the Everly Brothers at their show in Chattanooga this weekend, click here.

Ramseur signs Paleface! + Recording & more..
First of all, we are very excited to welcome a new member to the Ramseur Records family! We will be releasing Paleface's The Show Is On The Road in early 2009. Stay tuned for more updates and information on this album! www.palefaceonline.com
The Ramseur family is hard at work in the studio this year and we are hoping to bring you new music from all of our artists in 2009. The Avett Brothers just finished up a few weeks in the studio with Rick Rubin for their album that's due out on American / Columbia in the Spring. Samantha Crain & the Midnight Shivers will be going into the studio in September. They will be recording at Echo Mountain Studios, where Emotionalism was recorded -- and working with Danny Kadar (My Morning Jacket, The Avett Brothers, Tyler Ramsey). We hope to release that record in early Spring. Bombadil and the everybodyfields will be hitting the studio this fall, too. Plan to see records from them in late Spring / early Summer. To check out some new tracks from the everybodyfields, click on over to their recent Daytrotter session; to hear some from Samantha, check out her myspace player!
Don't worry, though - our bands will also be touring the nation this fall, as always.
the everybodyfields are currently on the road in support of Railroad Earth. Next up, they will embark on a headlining tour of the East coast throughout the rest of September and October. They were originally intended to open this tour for Will Hoge, but due to an auto accident, Will will not be able to make it on this tour. We wish Will the best and hope that you all will do your best to support this tour and come out to the shows! A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Will to help pay his medical bills.
On a lighter note, Samantha Crain will be heading out on the Hotel Cafe Tour next month, alongside Ingrid Michaelson, Meiko, Rachel Yamagata and more. Click here for more details. She will join the tour from Oct 23rd-Nov 1st. If it stops in a city near you, make sure to check it out! 2 Artists in Paste's Best of What's Next!
We are honored to have TWO artists in Paste Magazine's "Best of What's Next" September issue! Here's what they had to say about Samantha Crain and the everybodyfields:
Samantha Crain
Hometown: Shawnee, OK
Album: The Confiscation EP
Why She's Worth Watching: In a genre often pinned to formulaic sounds and themes, Samantha Crain is re-stitching the seams of Americana to fit her singular artistic vision. The 21-year old songwriter -- recently signed to tasteful North Carolina label Ramseur, which also houses The Avett Brothers and fellow Best of What's Next-ers everybodyfields -- paints mystical, poetic slipstreams of words onto a canvas of haunting echo-chamber lap steel, earthy acoustic guitars and loose-change tambourine, delivering her graceful songs with a gorgeous, quivering voice.
For Fans Of: Joanna Newsom, Andrew Bird, Mary Gauthier
Acceptance Speech: "Thank you! We can hardly conjugate verbs right now. We want to thank all the people at Paste who looked deep within their Magic 8 Balls before giving us this honor and -- to all the other bands out there -- we just want you to know how super-pumped your jealousy makes us feel right now! Thank you!"
the everybodyfields
Hometown: Johnson City and Knoxville, TN
Album: Nothing is Okay
Why They're Worth Watching: Sam Quinn and Jill Andrews form the core of one of today's greatest young country bands. Like the South itself, the everybodyfields deftly straddle old and new, bitter and sweet, desperation and transcendence with an arresting command. And no constrast is more stark - or beautiful - than the two voices: Andrews' smooth, clear alto and Quinn's ambling croon.
For Fans Of: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Emmylou Harris, The Band
Acceptance Speech: "Hot dog. If you had told me a year ago that living in an irrepressible coma of self-loathing and depression would in turn give an otherwise legitimate publication an inkling that this band would be something to watch -- man, I would have been surprised. Hot dog."
And check this out - a new Bombadil video, documenting their recent trip out west: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCiYTF9GPwQ (make sure to watch it in high quality)
Enjoy!
Reviews, Recordings and Shows!
We've had a busy couple of weeks at the Ramseur headquarters!
The Avett Brothers' latest release, The Second Gleam has been getting a ton of great reviews and placing on all sorts of charts, from Billboard to CMJ. we are very proud of this album and of the Brothers. They are in the studio this week with Rick Rubin working on their next full length record, due out in the Spring of 2009 on American / Columbia Records. Also, tickets for their show in Greensboro on 10/31 go on sale August 15th @ 10AM! Tickets will go fast for this show, so make sure to get yours as soon as you can. Also, tickets for their show in Greenville, SC at the Peace Center on 11/1 are on sale now. Click here for more details on both shows.
Samantha Crain's first Ramseur Records release is also doing really well, placing in the CMJ Top 200 in its first week and getting all sorts of good reviews. She will appear in Paste Magazine's "Artists to Watch" feature in the September issue and we will have a big tour announcement for her soon as well! To check out some new songs that Samantha and her band The Midnight Shivers recorded recently for Hear Ya! blog in Chicago, click here. They will be working on a full length record this September that we hope to have out by early next year.
Sammy Walker's Misfit Scarecrow has also seen a good amount of reviews as well. Here's a particularly nice one from the McKeesport Daily News: "4 Stars — Veteran singer-songwriter Sammy Walker doesn’t make many records, but when th 56-year-old Georgia native does hit the studio, the results are almost always fantastic. “Misfit Scarecrow” is Walker’s first release since 1994’s excellent “Old Time Southern Dream” and finds him in peak form with 15 original compositions that show off his wonderful blend of country and folk. Local listeners likely will appreciate “A Cold Pittsburgh Morning,” one of the better songs on the record, but Walker shines brightest on keepers “Another Sad Song About You,” “Superstitions Mine,” “And the Mississippi Delta Cried,” “Homer Byron McGuthrie,” Song for Jessie” and “In the Year Twenty-OFour.” There aren’t many missteps on “Misfit Scarecrow,” which isn’t surprising considering Walker had more than a decade to put together his best stuff, though “Little Town in Luxembourg” and “Proud and Poor” wouldn’t have been missed. Walker has earned the respect of industry professionals over his 30-plus-year career, but with just six albums to his name since 1976, it’s a shame he isn’t more of a household name."
the everybodyfields are also working on a new record, that will hopefully be out early next year. They will be hitting the road this fall for two support tours - one with Railroad Earth and the other with Will Hoge. Click here for the full schedule. While you're checking out tour dates, head on over to Bombadil's page. They're hitting the road hard, as usual, and will be all over this great nation in the coming months. We hope you can check them out soon.

The Avett Brothers sign to American!
We are honored to announce that The Avett Brothers have signed a deal with American / Columbia Records and have recently begun work on their next album, which is being produced by Rick Rubin!
We will continue to proudly represent them as their management company and can't wait to see what the future holds.
...a letter from The Avett Brothers:
"To our dearest fans,
Since we first performed as The Avett Brothers, we have been fortunate enough to find and build a genuine and mutual respect with those who care to listen. It is this kind exchange that champions our music, and allows us the forum to continue on our path, with this work, this art. We believe this to be an appropriate time for a brief update, as we would like for you all to know of the most noteworthy of present developments.
We have recently begun working on a new full length album with Rick Rubin. The recording process has been, and will no doubt continue to be,an experience defined by heightened levels of commitment and conviction. It is our distinct pleasure and honor to be in such fine company as we build and bring this most current chapter of songs to fruition.
With this union has come another, as we have just completed and signed an agreement with American/Columbia Records, the label with whom we will proudly release our next record. It is our sincere hope, in regard to this news, that our ongoing relationship with Ramseur Records is understood. There have not been, and will be no hard feelings or abandon-based resentment from either party involved. The Avett and Ramseur camps remain strongly and truthfully connected, both personally and professionally. There has been no change in these matters through this momentous transition.
For all of you who have gone to such great lengths to show your appreciation, we continue in our most sincere efforts to return the sentiment. The music would go nowhere without you. Our hearts and our minds are on the recording of this next album, and we look forward with great anticipation to sharing it with you all. Until then, thank you as always, and we will see you somewhere on that open road...
Sincerely,
The Avett Brothers
July, 2008 "

Samantha Crain - getting a lot of press!
We are very excited to see that Ramseur Records' fledgling artist Samantha Crain is not only tearing up stages across the country, but getting a lot of good press doing it! Here are just a few clips from some recent press:
The Charlotte Observer:
"Led by the Oklahoma Shawnee Indian's haunting and hypnotic voice, the group plays the kind of songs you can easily imagine coming from a dusty record player as you stumble through a creepy, dark cabin. Not that this EP concerns itself with cheap scares - the songs are stark and stirring. Crain sings with an unusual, hard-to-pinpoint accent; her voice rests somewhere between Feist and Martha Wainwright. This five-track taste will leave listeners anxiously awaiting a full-length album."
The Daily Times:
"It's weighty stuff for any singer-songwriter to tackle -- themes of good vs. evil, of damnation and redemption -- but despite her pixie-ish nature, Samantha Crain addresses them admirably on her new album, "The Confiscation."...It has the visceral impact of a musical scar -- tender to the touch, set apart from the rest of the skin by raised contours and hidden crevices, evoking a body memory as well as an emotional one upon first listen. Her voice is plaintive and distinct, possessed with an urgency that's at once girlish and ancient. If anything, "The Confiscation" is a study in dichotomy -- a balanced set of scales, just as she originally intended."
Go Triad:
There is something about her music that calls to mind Joanna Newsom, except hardier and more from the gut, instead of wherever it is that Newsom gets that sound of hers. Actually, finding an accurate and honest description of Crain's sound is something of an interesting topic. On Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers' MySpace page, the band's sound and influences are listed as "distinctly Oklahoman," meaning "music that comes from Oklahoma has a weird cross-section. The Flaming Lips and Woody Guthrie are two figureheads around here," Crain said. "I can always tell when a band is from Oklahoma. Listening to experimental music like (The Flaming Lips) mixed with traditional folk music creates a cross-section. We're labeled as 'folk rock,' which makes pretty apparent our love for the two types of music."
Playback.com:
"With her whisper-soft voice, Samantha Crain has definitely made herself stand out with her EP, The Confiscation. The young singer has a voice that sounds as though Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst were crossed with Cat Power. She's almost so quiet that the music seems to overpower her at moments, but she holds her place against the background of acoustic guitars and Dylan-esque harmonica riffs."
TimeOut New York:
"Oklahoma singer-songwriter Samantha Crain is sure to attract a raft of Cat Power comparisons (like most female singer-songwriters), but she's got talent enough to stand apart. Newcomer Samantha Crain's new EP The Confiscation is presented as a "musical novella"-- and as records go, it's a real page-turner."
Nashville Scene:
"Crain’s singing and thoroughly literary-minded songwriting—not to mention the way she weaves in experimental elements like ambient noise between tracks on Confiscation—are vibrant expansions on folk music."
Yes!Weekly:
"She is the youngest and newest member of Ramseur Records, a Concord, NC-based record label managing stanchion bands such as the Avett Brothers and the everybodyfields. She and her band, the Midnight Shivers, are also recipients of the Oklahoma Gazette's 2008 Woody Award for best folk band. Further lifting the wings of this phoenix of a band is the honor of having a day officially dedicated to Samantha by the mayor of her hometown, Shawnee, OK."

Mark your calendars - July 22nd!
The Avett Brothers, The Second Gleam
This EP, the second in a series, is the latest work by Scott and Seth Avett - of Concord's own The Avett Brothers. This album is a collection of six songs, stripped down to the bare essentials. The simplicity of The Gleam series showcases the brothers' true talent for writing songs that speak straight to the heart. With the huge success of last year's Emotionalism, and sold-out crowds of thousands from San Francisco to New York to Atlanta, The Avett Brothers are a force to be reckoned with.
Also, on July 26th, the Avett Brothers will be celebrating the release of The Second Gleam with their first headlining show in NC this year - at Koka Booth Ampitheatre in Cary, NC. A fan-only presale went live yesterday and 500 tickets have already been sold! Tickets to the general public go on sale May 9, 2008.
The Confiscation: A Musical Novella by Samantha Crain
Samantha Crain is the newest addition to Ramseur Records, and we are very proud to have her on board. This Shawnee, OK singer-songwriter has received accolades from press and fans across the nation and is poised to take the country by storm. This album is a collection of short stories in the form of song. The Confiscation structures itself in such a way that every individual composition flows into the next to ensure that each narration is understood as only a part of the whole tale. Everybody has a story and The Confiscation shares a few of those heartbreaking accounts alongside the hopeful ones too. While each narrative is of a different voice, they all relate, as do the people involved, through the atonement that is bestowed, or the Judas kiss that plunders all.
Sammy Walker: Misfit Scarecrow
We are truly honored to be releasing Misfit Scarecrow - the first album released by Sammy Walker in over twelve years. Sammy Walker was born in 1952 and grew up in Norcross, Georgia. Sammy began singing and writing original tunes at an early age while being heavily influenced by Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams and Doc Watson. He began performing these songs in coffee houses around the University of Georgia in the early 70’s. In 1974, Sammy Walker sent a homemade tape of some of his songs to Sis and Gordon Friesen at Broadside, where they were well received and subsequently published. As a result of Gordon's giving a copy of the tape to Bob Fass at WBAI radio in New York City, Walker was invited to New York to appear on Fass's show. Phil Ochs heard him for the first time on this show, and the two soon met and exchanged songs and stories. Within two months, Ochs had arranged the recording of Sammy's album for Folkways, and convinced Warner Brothers to sign him for two records. Ochs produced Sammy's first album for Folkways. It was called “Song For Patty” and featured newspaper heiress Patty Hearst on the cover of the album. Sammy recorded two superb albums for Warner Bros. that were produced by legendary producer Nik Venet. Walker was managed by the late Harold Leventhal (manager of Woody Guthrie, The Weavers, Pete Seeger, etc...). Walker currently lives in the western part of North Carolina.
All of these records will be available nationwide on July 22, 2008. Please support your local independent record store!
The Gleam 2, new book and more...
On July 22nd, along with two other albums (Sammy Walker: Misfit Scarecrow and Samantha Crain: The Confiscation), we will be releasing The Avett Brothers' new EP, The Second Gleam. This project will be a first for us, as it will be released on CD, digitally and on vinyl!
The Avett Brothers release The Second Gleam; six new songs offered with the natural lyrical clarity and honest delivery that has become synonymous with their name. With this addition to their growing body of work, Scott and Seth Avett establish a series, while further separating their writing from the modern landscape of music, popular or otherwise. Following in the initial footsteps of the first Gleam recording, this second installment sings to the uncommon senses of the common man. The record walks calmly and powerfully among fragile and hard-learned themes of life and song, passing through loss, change, hope, death, dedication to family, late nights in the hospital, love as always, and much more. At once plain and poetic, simple and complicated as those who will give their time to hear it, we find: The Second Gleam.
In other news, we are very honored to say that The Avett Brothers and Ramseur Records have made their way into a piece of Carolina's music history. Novello Festival Press recently released a new book called Making Notes: Music of the Carolinas, edited by Ann Wicker. The book is a collection of essays about the history and impact of music that was born in the Carolinas. Courtney Devores, a talented and lovely freelance writer who does a lot of work for the Charlotte Observer, was kind enough to write a piece on the Avett Brothers for the book. For more information and to get your copy, click here.

In other news, on July 22, 2008 Ramseur Records is honored to be releasing not one, but THREE albums by three stellar artists from the Ramseur fold. Since the beginning, the one unifying theme that all Ramseur Records releases have held is this: songwriting that transcends genres, cuts through the pretense and truly means something. We pride ourselves in putting out art of substance that affects people -- from punk rockers to classical music enthusiasts; construction workers to college professors. When the meaning behind the music is real, nothing else matters. With that being said we are honored to release the following:

Metro Magazine – April 2008
Dolph Ramseur and The Avett Brothers
By Philip van Vleck
North Carolina’s Avett Brothers are a known quantity for music fans from Charlotte to San Francisco. Their distinctive sound — an anarchic amalgam of bluegrass, Americana and rock; their outstanding songwriting; and their highly combustible live performances have made the trio an unlikely sensation.
The silent partner in the continuing success of The Avett Brothers is Dolph Ramseur, founder of Ramseur Records. He’s the indefatigable indie label owner, as much the architect of The Avett Brothers rise to prominence as the Avetts themselves.
Ramseur is a native of North Carolina, born and raised in Concord. He was a young tennis whiz, which eventually led him to enroll at Ferris State University in Michigan.

The everybodyfields hail from the high and lonesome terrain of Johnson City, Tennessee, which sits 100 miles east of Knoxville in the heart of the Smoky Mountains. With some of Lambchop's electric spaciousness and even more of early Whiskeytown's country-rock storytelling, Jill Andrews and Sam Quinn turn the wreckage of their own romance into the languid confessions of Nothing Is Okay. Their 2007 Ramseur debut (Ramseur's home to old-time punks The Avett Brothers), Okay is an album of shining pedal steel, angry electric guitars, stately piano and ex-lovers' harmonies. They're relentless in their pitch-perfect country pleas, building metaphors out of cancer and dreams to get at what hurts and why and then singing that pain straight into the clear blue mountain skies.

2008 Oklahoma Gazette: Woody Awards - Best Folk Band
Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers
2008 Woody Awards celebrate best in metro music
Music created in Oklahoma has circled the globe — setting records, reaping awards and climbing the charts — continuing to prove that Sooner State bands and musicians are a presence to which attention is worth paying. The world knows that Okies rock, so it’s once again time for Oklahoma Gazette to roll out the annual picks for the best of reader-nominated music minds from the metro — newly minted Woody Award winners one and all. —Joe Wertz
Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers put on a live show that frenzy the emotions of all who are listening. The unique blend of alt-country and folk music can give you a foot-stomping good time and minutes later bring you to heartbreaking tears.

Bombadil
One
"A long-lost Elephant 6 band who spent the last 10 years listening to mid-60s Dylan?"
"This is not the best album of the year, but it's certainly one of the
most entertaining and possibly one of the most inventive."
Two
"it's adventurous, sometimes cute, and often melodic and/or random. While at its core a pop record, it's hardly formulaic."

--Shipwreck
"Only 21 years of age, young Crain has conjured up a batch of rural orchestrations that somehow manages, in five songs, to bridge the gap between Radiohead and The Carter Family."

The Confiscation EP - Ramseur Records - Summer 2008
myspace.com/samanthacrain
Sometimes music is a collision of opposites. Realities clash and coexist, and the tension that results is scary and strange, but undeniably beautiful. Maybe that's why Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers embody so many conflicting unities and clashing identities. With a blow-your-hair-back vocal presence that occasionally yields to whisper-soft vulnerability, Samantha Crain unites the sounds of confidence and desperation. Traditional folk arrangements tremble beneath the tasteful drumming of Jacob Edwards, the heart-beating bass lines from Andrew Tanz. Lyrics about disaster and despair peacefully coexist with anthems of community and reconciliation. Here are darkness and light; here are life and death.
These colliding realities stem most notably from Crain's unlikely artistic heritage, which she wears on her sleeve but just as readily transcends. Hailing from the state that birthed both The Flaming Lips and Woody Guthrie, Samantha Crain writes with both the brazen conviction of the latter and the unflinching creative ambition of the former. Hers is a folk tradition indebted to Radiohead as much as Bob Dylan. Her shadowy arrangements and razor-sharp lyrics blur whatever superficial lines of genre or aesthetic may seem to separate these influences. It seems whatever the ingredients, she has a place for them in her inexplicable artistic recipe. Her sound is deeply rural and southern, but also itinerant and urban. Like Jack Kerouac before her, Crain is lost on the subway, sleeping in boxcars, leaving lovers behind, and dining in small town obscurity all within a few short days.
Nearly more remarkable than her creative vision is her practical ambition. At the young age of twenty-one, Samantha Crain already has a booking agency, several national tours, and dozens of self-produced recordings to her credit. Her and her band's tireless work ethic promise years of fruitful touring and recording, and their dynamic live performances are gathering a widespread community with every subsequent tour. They are uniting opposites, living deeply, and working fruitfully, with no signs of slowing down any time soon.
Currently they are playing shows and promoting the Confiscation EP which will be released on Ramseur Records in the Summer of 2008. It was produced by Joey Lemon of the Chicago-based band, Berry.
Big Tours Coming Up!

A bit about Bombadil:
With a sound all their own and a stage show to match, Bombadil is, if nothing else, one of the freshest bands to emerge in a long time. Formed by Daniel Michalak, Bryan Rahija and Stuart Robinson, this band draws on a unique mélange of influences to create a sound that is unclassifiable. The group Magnet Magazine deemed “a drunker, circus-reared version of The Band,” was born in Bolivia, where Michalak and Rahija first met. The folk music indigenous to the region lit a creative spark and inspired the two to begin writing songs that incorporated international instruments and styles. That influence, paired with their collective backgrounds in Piedmont blues, psychedelic rock and Robinson’s background as a classical pianist, stands as the driving force behind the band’s unique sound.
Their songs range from straightforward rock to Bolivian waltzes; from heartbreaking, piano-driven laments on loss of life to swashbuckling, raucus marches; and the appeal of their live show is undeniable. With a core of electric / acoustic guitars, bass, piano and drums and appearances by harmonica, xylophone, organ, synth, saxophone, trumpet, viola, charango, glockenspiel, accordion, recorder and even zampona, the show is unlike anything else. When even half of the instruments on stage are sounding at once, it creates a wall of sound that seems to transport the room to another place.
All of the instrumentation, however, does not detract at all from the core of Bombadil—anthemic, concrete songwriting. Much like Ramseur Records labelmates The Avett Brothers and the everybodyfields, the complicated, endearing character of their songs keeps Bombadil grounded and guides the show seamlessly along. It is what allows them to carry a room, whether there are one hundred instruments on stage or just a single guitar and voice. It is what people connect to—and why they keep coming back.
Happy New Year!
We'd like to take a moment to thank each and every one of you who made 2007 the biggest year in Ramseur Records history. We achieved more last year than we ever thought possible. The Avett Brothers have sold close to 30,000 copies of Emotionalism in just seven months, cracked three Billboard charts, made their national TV debut and received countless accolades from fans and press across the country. They sold out in Charlotte, Asheville, Raleigh, New York City, Greensboro, Wilmington, San Francisco, Seattle and found new fans everywhere in between.
The everybodyfields had a great year too, with their first Ramseur release flying off the shelves, top spots in a number of “best of 2007” lists, and sell out crowds all over the southeast.
On December 30th, Bombadil had their first ever sell-out show with Langhorne Slim and Paleface in Greensboro! And while 2008 is shaping up to be the biggest year yet for Bombadil, ’07 wasn’t too shabby at all. They’re picking up a lot of steam and bringing out more and more people everywhere they go.
We’ve got a lot of big things coming up this year, including a new release from Bombadil – A Buzz, a Buzz – due out in the spring and countless shows and appearances by all of our artists throughout the year. Please check out all of their schedules (linked below) and do your part to support live music (and us!).

#12
The Avett Brothers
Emotionalism
"With a kick-drum thump and a wild-man scream, these 14 stunning songs carve into your chest and settle in, stitching up the gaping flesh with shredded banjo strings-only to rip free again while the wound is still fresh, leaving you bloody, gasping and desperate for more. A true breakthrough from this hard-working band."
#43
the everybodyfields
Nothing is Okay
"Like a good cry-and like the best country music-Jill Andrews and Sam Quinn's songs are all shuddering sighs, aching confessions and upturned hearts spilling out over layers of pedal steel, fiddle and acoustic guitar, delivered by two of the most disparately beautiful voices to ever meld."
#49
Carolina Chocolate Drops
Dona Got A Ramblin' Mind
(Music Maker)
"Bravely and expertly reclaiming the string-band tradition for modern African-American culture, the Chocolate Drops are the real Deal, reaching back to pre-WWII styles and breathing life into them with the energetic performances captured on this down-home debut."

Slim’s, San Francisco :: THE AVETT BROTHERS :: Thursday, August 9, 2007
"On this humid evening, the North Carolina-based screwgrass trio put themselves through an intense onstage workout, and they had the sweat-destroyed shirts to prove it. 'That’s what we do every night,' explains singer/banjo player/kick drummer Scott Avett. 'We have a rule: You can’t walk away dry, which is why there’s a lot of mildew in our bags.'"
In other news, Emotionalism is one step away from a Grammy Award nomination! The final nominees for the Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album will be chosen from a pool of 30 records; one of which is The Avett Brothers' acclaimed 2007 release!

the everybodyfields
Paste Magazine - November 2007 - Reviews Section
“Rummaging through the dark closet of the South, Sam Quinn and Jill Andrews trade gorgeous, aching vocals that sear through a tapestry of plaintive fiddle and pedal steel. Sometimes love don’t feel like it should, but who’s to say what’s right or wrong with sadness this divine?”
HARP Magazine - November 2007 - Reviews Section
"The Everybodyfields exist where fall and winter meet. Jill Andrews and Sam Quinn's dulcet vocal melodies are crisp and bracing as the autumn air, wafting through a small clutch of leafless oaks... The Johnson City, Tenn., quartet's folk-pop fragility recalls Elliott Smith draped in dark Southern gothic... Sadness can be so beautiful."

Martin Stephenson
No Depression Magazine - November 2007 - Reviews Section
"Stephenson's heart seems to be in the Appalachia nowadays, especially in the North Carolina mountain country that produced Doc Watson, Charlie Poole and other 20th-century American roots masters... Hell's Half Acre: The SoundField Sessions is billed as a field recording and the atmosphere is appealingly casual... putting the listener right into the middle of a porch pickin' session with some great players. The occasional ambient bug, bird and passing car don't detract at all... Lovely and unexpected."

New Ramseur releases in the works!
Some very exciting things are cooking in the Ramseur Records kitchen...
Sammy Walker, a Georgia-born songwriter, influenced by Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams and Doc Watson has been making music since the early 70s. After being discovered by Phil Ochs, who produced his first album on Smithsonian Folkways, he went on to release three more outstanding records; two of which were released on Warner Bros. and the third on Folkways.
This new collection of songs entitled Misfit Scarecrow, is Sammy's first release on Ramseur Records. The album features Tony Williamson, who is one of the best mandolinplayers in the world.
One standout track on the record, titled And The Mississippi Delta Cried, tells the story of Emmett Til, a young African-American boy from Chicago who was brutally murdered in Mississippi in 1941. His murder has been cited as one of the main sparks that lit a fire under the American Civil Rights Movement. To learn more about his story, click here. And to hear the song, click here.
We hope to release the album in the very near future.
In the other, more whimsical side of the kitchen, Bombadil is hard at work on their new album. They are coming down the home stretch and are gearing up for an early 2008 release. We will have a lot more info on that album in the coming months.
Please check out the tour dates for all of our bands, who are all hitting the road as hard as always this week: The Avett Brothers, the everybodyfields, Bombadil, Mad Tea Party & the Carolina Chocolate Drops.
Thanks for listening!

For more info, please check out their tour schedule!
The everybodyfields are gearing up for their last weekend in the southeast for a while... this week, they'll be in North Carolina and Virginia before heading out West for a month. On Thursday, they'll be in Wilmington at The Soapbox. Then on Friday, they'll be on The State of Things at 12PM, hold an in-store performance at School Kids Records in Chapel Hill at 6 and then end the night at the Local 506. Finally, on Friday, they'll be doing another in-store performance at Crossroads CDs in Blacksburg, VA, before they head to Roanoke for a show at the 202 Market. Check out their full schedule here.
Bombadil is still hard at work in the studio, finishing up their first full-length album, due out on Ramseur Records in early 2008. To check out some photos from the recording session by our friend Adam Hajnos, click here. They will return to touring in October, starting with a show at the Acoustic Coffeehouse on October 5th and a big show at the Evening Muse on the 6th, with Paleface and Ian Thomas. They've got a lot of shows lined up for the winter - find out where they're headed by clicking here.
In Ramseur Management News:
Mad Tea Party will also be in the studio this week, but will also return triumphantly to the touring world in the beginning of October with two shows in Virginia on the 5th and 6th and a big hometown show at the Grey Eagle in Asheville on October 7th. Read more about them here.
And finally, the Carolina Chocolate Drops are still out there, playing festivals and venues all over the country. Martin Stephenson Shows THIS week!
This week, Ramseur Records is honored to welcome Martin Stephenson to our side of the pond. Martin, a highly-respected and critically lauded UK singer-songwriter, is in the U.S. this week, celebrating his new release out on Ramseur Records this week. This record is titled Hell's Half Acre: The SoundField Sessions and was recorded on the front porch of Ramseur Records' own Dolph Ramseur. The songs on this disc were inspired by the town of Midland, North Carolina, known by the locals as "Hell's Half Acre." This beautifully recorded, stripped-down album truly displays Stephenson's songwriting virtuousity.
Martin will be selling copies of the record at his shows in Atlanta and Charlotte this week! On Thursday, he will be in Atlanta at Eddie's Attic and on Friday, he will be at the Evening Muse in Charlotte with Paleface!
Don't miss your chance to see this living legend perform live!

Nothing is Okay, in stores Tuesday!
We are priveledged to officially welcome the everybodyfields into the Ramseur Records fold. This Tuesday marks the release of their new album, Nothing is Okay. We could go on for days about how great this record is, but instead we'd like to defer to the critics:
"Nothing is Okay shimmers with achingly beautiful songs that recall Neil Young in his Harvest/Comes a Time mode. Gorgeous, moving and rootsy by nature, not design."
—Hal Horowitz, Creative Loafing Atlanta
"Nothing Is Okay ranges from the shambling “Aeroplane,” whose homey melody recalls The Band, to the swelling, reverb-drenched guitar of “Don’t Turn Around,” reminiscent of a backwoods My Morning Jacket. "
—Chris Parker, Nashville Scene
"Loss and loneliness are indeed subjects that the everybodyfields lyricize most effectively. Good thing the music itself is gorgeous enough to induce a kind of bittersweet warmth."
—Rebecca Bowen, Paste
"If you are a fan of [Gillian] Welch's brilliantly slow-paced Time (The Revelator), then you will find much to like in the everybodyfields, who offer a similar slow burning melancholy hill-country vibe... Quinn and Andrews deliver songs that are brilliantly written snapshots of the underbelly of rural life, filled with visions of loneliness, alcoholism, and loss. There is plenty of originality in this fantastic group including Sam Quinn's quivering vocals that often capture the emotion of Michael Stipe and the old-soul blues of M Ward."
—ListenNashville.com
Paste Magazine has also chosen the everybodyfields for their "Band of the Week" feature! Click here to read the article.
The album will be available through most online retailers, through the everybodyfields website and in indie stores across the country. This week, they will be on Woodsongs Radio Hour with the Avett Brothers (Monday); on WNCW this Thursday and have in-store performances in Knoxville & Nashville, TN and Greenville, SC. They've also got a big show this Saturday in their hometown of Johnson City, TN at the Down Home. Please check out their full schedule here.

SOME UPCOMING RAMSEUR RECORDS RELEASES
August 21, 2007 - Nothing is Okay - the everybodyfields:
“Sometimes, nothing is a pretty cool hand.” -Cool Hand Luke
The quality of communication between two people during the time of a sizable rift is fair-weather at best. The few words that do get through are not the ones that you hold dearly when resting your head to pillow; rather these are the ones that keep jaws locked tightly until hopefully, finally, fatigue sets in. After your mind has been poisoned by hatred, after you’ve lost your voice from screaming, after the words have stopped coming together, you have once again managed to tare yourself back to center. Right back to where you started—at nothing.
These songs are one years’ worth of conversations between people who decided equally to stop talking to each other. They are perhaps more honest and useful than any which might have transpired. This is not a biography of happiness, nor is it a field guide to discontent. These songs are a mutual offering to the characters involved herein. Everything is completely screwed. Everything is totally fine. Which is it? Why not both?

September 18, 2007 - Hell's Half Acre - Martin Stephenson:
The locals in and around the one-stoplight town of Midland, North Carolina know it better as "Hell's Half Acre." It earned its colorful name during the 1930's, when an unusually large concentration of moonshine stills attracted a rough bunch of hellions to the town. The old hellions begot little hellions, and Midland stayed true to its nickname for decades after prohibition ended. It was against that storied backdrop that the legendary English singer-songwriter and guitarist Martin Stephenson decided to record an album on the porch and in the kitchen of Ramseur Records owner and engineer Dolph Ramseur's Midland home. The album is called "Hell's Half Acre."
Stephenson is perhaps best known for his post-punk band, the Daintees, which were contemporaries of U2, Echo & the Bunnymen, and The Smiths, but he is most loved for his quieter, more intimate work that continues to this day. In recent years, Stephenson became enchanted with the endemic music of North Carolina and wrote a beautiful album's worth of songs inspired by the region.
To read more about the album and to listen to two songs, please go to myspace.com/ramseurrecords
Spring 2008 - As of Yet Untitled - Bombadil
A theatrical experience that rumbles while the sun abstains. A train, a pyramid, a kazoo, and you are involved. So are lamps. Smiling is encouraged...as well as crying and dancing...
Durham NC's Bombadil uses whimsical lyrics and upbeat melodies to create a helter-skelter fusion of honky-tonk, folk and pop. Their sound - a melange of instrumentation that revolves around piano-laden folk-rock with nods to classic rock and the British Invasion - is a mix of a poor man's Shins mixed with a less-countrified version of The Gourds. But one thing is certain: Bombadil's music emanates optimism.

We're also really looking forward to the new Richard Hawley album, Lady's Bridge which is out on August 20th of this year. After the show, Dolph Ramseur and Dane Honeycutt -- tour manager for the Avett Brothers -- went to hang out with Richard and Graham at their favorite pub in Sheffield, England. They got a sneak preview of one of the tracks from the new record and it was breathtaking.
